Individual therapy is perhaps the most traditional form of therapy. I see individuals, couples, and families. My areas of specialization and interest include: addiction & dual diagnosis, anxiety & mood disorders, personality disorders, and issues stemming from family of origin experiences. I commonly utilize EMDR, and The Daring Way™.
Sessions are typically 50 minutes in length. Should we find that we need more time, we will discuss the possibility of 90 minute sessions.
Our brains are literally hardwired to connect with ourselves and others. Our minds and hearts are most connected when we are embracing our true and authentic selves. I have had the pleasure of being trained to facilitate this work. It is work that I use often both in my professional work and my personal life.
Think of the brain like a big filing cabinet. The brain is very efficient and smart. It knows where to file most things. However, when something deeply distressing happens, the brain does not know where to file that memory and it gets stuck with no where to go. Because it is not properly filed, seemingly unrelated things can trigger that memory and lead to more distressing experiences. EMDR helps the brain properly file away that original memory or experience, which then decreases how distressing it is and minimizes triggers.
